Villager offers heartfelt thanks to pharmacy

Each year millions of working days are lost to common colds and flu.
Abbots Langley Pharmacy can help you to stay well this winter.  It doesn’t cost you to get our advice, but if it helps you to keep fit & healthy, you will be glad you’ve taken it!

So, drop in to see us, and encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to do so.
We can:
Supply an NHS or private Flu Jab
Give tips about reducing your risk of catching colds, flu and    other common ailments
Advise on what medicines to stock at home, so that you can respond   quickly to any winter ailments
Treat the symptoms of colds and flu and many other common    ailments
Help people to quit smoking.  Smoking tends to increase the severity   of winter ailments like coughs and colds
Advise on when it’s the right choice to visit your GP or other health   care provider.  Your doctors appointment might be unnecessary if it is   about self-limiting illnesses like sore throat or earache.

Obesity is one of the major health issues facing people today in the UK and around the world. Being overweight or obese can put you at increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. To be able control your weight means taking control of the food you eat. We live in a society where delicious and highly desirable foods are readily available. The average person uses little more than one Calorie per minute but the energy from, say a bar of chocolate, provides around 300 calories – this will normally power the body for about five hours. The point being that it is very easy to eat more than your body actually needs, thus causing weight gains.

So why is weight such a problem? The hunger drive is a very strong biological instinct and is underestimated by many people. In effect, our bodies can act as if they are addicted to food. So losing weight can be similar to treating an addiction.

Losing even a small amount of weight can make the following differences to your health:
• Increased energy levels
• Increased mobility
• Reduced breathlessness
• Reduced joint pain
• Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
• Reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease

We have a number of initiatives including a Weight Management Programme to help you manage your weight. Come and talk to our friendly team for more details.
